Vintage Royal Vistas Ware Tankard - "The Scheldt" (from paintings by famous artists) - Ridgways, Made in England

The Ridgway family was one of the important dynasties manufacturing Staffordshire pottery, with a large number of family members and business names, over a period from the 1790s to the late 20th century. In their heyday in the mid-19th century there were several different potteries run by different branches of the family. Most of their wares were earthenware, but often of very high quality. They can generally be described as serving the middle and upper parts of the market, avoiding the cheapest popular wares. As with other factories, a great amount of good quality earthenware was transfer-printed with heavily elaborate designs. From 1808 porcelain was produced, in a great profusion of patterns.

Transferware is a transfer printing process whereas a metal plate is etched with a familiar scene and ink is applied and then a tissue print is produced. The print is then applied to the pottery on top of the brown glaze.

This tankard will have been produced in the 1800s and two transfers can be seen on the tankard. This particular tankard is called “The Scheldt”. It is marked Royal Vistas Ware "from paintings by famous artists".

It is over 100 years old and has areas that are worn for example a slight chip to rim. The handle and bottom rim feel a little uneven but all in all it is a lovely collector’s item. Due to the type of glaze used on the pottery it does have crazing. It is a weighty piece weighing in at 550g.

Dimensions are 11 1/2 cms high and 13 cms wide (including handle).
